ABOUT 50DT CAMP

50 Dangerous Things… camp is a school holiday programme inspired by the work of educator and author Gever Tulley and the Tinkering School movement in the USA.  Like Gever and his co-conspiritor Julie Spiegler, we believe that

Risky, messy, collaborative, free-ranging

outdoor play is good for children.

Connecting with the natural world, being free to play, experimenting (and sometimes, failing) and making important, purposeful decisions is crucial to the wellbeing and healthy development of children.

At 50 Dangerous Things… camp children are outdoors all day, whatever the weather, and participate in a range of planned (and fully risk assessed) ‘dangerous’ activities, as well as having plenty of free time to chill out, socialise and pursue their own interests.

The ‘dangers’ we refer to are not necessarily physically risky – although some certainly are.  We also offer children opportunities to take emotional and intellectual risks in their play, and we support and scaffold their progress so that they explore, test and play at a pace they are comfortable with.  We aim to while away the holidays doing stuff children are unlikely to experience at school or at more conventional day camps.

  • 50DT's 3-day weeks are flexible and whilst themed, are shaped by the weather - although we don’t let it stop us getting out and about.

  • Children's favourite activities are available every day - for example tree climbing; den building; bushcraft; constructions; playing with and cooking on the fire; pond dipping and so on.

  • We accept children from 5 years old to 11 years old. Campers attend for as many days as they like, although many choose to come each day in order to complete their projects.

We adhere to the 'rub it better' school of hard(ish) knocks - although our team does of course include fully trained paediatric first aiders.

Hard earned bumps, bruises, burns and bashes are all part of a 50DT day - although Miss E (above) did arrive with that broken arm, honest.

She arrived with that broken arm, honest...
